“There I was with the truck chasing me, feeling so alone… I pressed hard on the accelerator, wishing now that I’d been driving my beautiful, powerful Porsche instead of my kid car, the Ford Explorer… I switched lanes, weaving back and forth as I tried to avoid being rammed again. I knew if he hit me any harder I might lose control of the Ford… Then, when he started to catch up again and I realized where we were, I knew what he wanted to do. We were at a deadly section of PCD where there were no houses or guardrails, and a treacherous cliff was only a few southbound lanes over. A plunge over the side would be fatal. No sooner had I thought it than I saw the headlights coming up behind me fast. I braced for the impact even as I swerved to avoid it.” (Excerpt from Dial Emmy for Murder, p. 167-168)

The Plot

Alexis Peterson has moved to another show since her last brush with murder, but the disguise of her new character definitely isn’t helping her to hide from another investigation.

This time Peterson is helping investigate the murder of several young actors. The search begins when Peterson’s The Bare and the Brazen costar, Jackson Masters, is found dead, hanging above her while she is presenting at the Daytime Emmy Awards. Soon the detectives learn that several other actors fitting Masters’ description have also been murdered.

On top of trying to find a serial killer, Peterson is also dealing with a mess of drama in her personal life. The ex-husband who stole from her years ago then disappeared has returned to see his daughter, and Det. Frank Jakes, a man whom Peterson has a serious attraction to, has returned to help with the hunt.

Will Peterson find the person or persons who are responsible for the deaths before another murder is committed? Will she be able to keep her ex from destroying her daughter’s life, as she believes he will? And will she be able to push her feelings for Det. Jakes aside in order to stay focused on the goal?
