On the July 15, 2009 episode of So You Think You Can Dance, Top 10 Perform, the women chose their new partners out of a hat, which made for some interesting couples.
Group Performances
Female – Bollywood – Nigel said the performance was incredible and lacked nothing. Mary thought the women looked stunning. She said they all looked like they belong in the finals. Debbie thought it was the best group of final five girls the show has ever had.
Male – African – Nigel thought the choreography was one of the best and toughest. Mary loved how Evan held his own even though it wasn’t his genre. Debbie was proud and impressed by the way the men took on such a difficult genre of dance.
Couple Performances
Kayla, Evan – Viennese waltz – Kayla danced beautifully but overshadowed Evan because she is so much taller. Nigel thought the couple looked strong for their disadvantage. Mary thought Evan needed to be more powerful but thought Kayla continued to take it to another level. Debbie was impressed with how Evan handled the height difference.
Janette, Ade – Hip-hop – Janette is not only a great dancer but a fantastic actress. This dance was hot! Nigel loved how well Janette and Ade’s height disadvantage was used for positive. Mary said the performance was pure entertainment and well synchronized. Debbie thought the couple was mesmerizing together.
Jeanine, Jason – Contemporary – This was one of the most beautiful routines this season. The large number of lifts could’ve been disasterous but they were gorgeous. Everyone was on their feet when this performance ended. Nigel said they both became stars after that performance. Mary was so proud of the dancers and the choreographer, Travis Wall, who was a past competitor. Debbie called the couple “a magical pairing.”
Randi, Kupono – Paso Doble – This Paso Doble wasn’t as intense or technically on as Paso Dobles we’ve seen in the past. Nigel thought Kupono was too light on his feet, and he didn’t like Randi’s wig. Mary said the routine, passion and pairing wasn’t believable. Debbie said she didn’t feel the heat.
Melissa, Brandon – Broadway – This performance was magical! The choreography and costume perfectly matched the song (Aquarius from Hair), and it made me want to see more. Nigel loved how Melissa and Brandon’s talents were used to the fullest. Mary said it was unbelievable. Debbie thought the couple was seamless together.
Individual Performances
Brandon puts a lot of emotion in to his performances but sometimes his move seem random and sporadic. Randi’s solo was nice but wasn’t as beautiful or as entertaining as some of the other solos. Kupono’s solo was a little odd but it was very strong and eye appealing. Melissa, as always, was breathtaking to watch. She is such a strong ballerina, and she makes her elegant performances look effortless. Evan’s solo was fun, exciting and entertaining. Hopefully, Evan will show up on Broadway someday.
Kayla is another incredible dancer. Her lines and leaps are beautiful, and she always looks so happy to be on stage. Ade’s leaps, flips and turns were incredible. He had so many moves going on it was overwhelming but in a good way. Jeanine’s performance was fantastic. Her leaps are near perfect, and she appears to be floating on air. Jason’s solo was theatrical but not so exciting. Honestly, it was a little boring. It is no wonder Janette is a favorite. She is so much fun to watch. Her only glitch during this solo may have been that at times her body was too wild.
